Whetu was New Zealand's longest serving female MP and a highly regarded Maori leader. She was of the Nga Tahu tribe and was the Labour MP for Southern Maori (1967-1996). In 1993 she was appointed to the Order of New Zealand Merit and over her political career was Minister of Tourism, Associate Minister of Social Welfare, and Minister for the Environment. Instrumental in establishing the Waitangi Tribunal, Whetu was also the founding President of the New Zealand Maori Students' Federation.
