Profile Image

Russell (70) died cycling while raising funds for the bird charity Wingspan. He was a keen conservationist and local Warkworth volunteer, training for two years before setting off on his 3000 km TOUR AOTEAROA (length of NZ) journey in 30 days or less. Tragically he suffered a sudden heart attack after cycling up a steep incline in the lower North Island, later dying in hospital. Fellow TOUR cyclist Robert Chandler carried Russell’s mascot (a NZ Falcon (kārearea) plushie given to him by his wife) on his own bike, finishing at Bluff as Russell had intended.
