Anton (81) was an international weightlifting athlete and coach and was highly respected at an Olympic level.
During the 1960's he had won eight national titles in Sri Lanka. He came to NZ in 1970 and won three titles here before switching to powerlifting in the mid 70s and winning a further two national titles.
In 1990 he was the weightlifting team doctor at the Commonwealth Games. For decades he continued to coach athletes in Southland.
Tragically he died at the scene of a vehicle crash on Bluff Highway near the Waimatuku Bridge, Woodend. RIP Anton.
