A four year olds intrigue with water proved devastating and heart-breaking for his Gisborne family. Lucas wandered from his grandmother's home while she was unpacking groceries and answering the phone and was found nine days later in the Waimata River only 400m upstream from the property. Lucas was known as a gregarious and adventurous child and it appears he biked down the path leading to the river jetty while his grandmothers back was turned. Dozens of searchers had looked for Lucas on land and water, including the Gisborne harbour entrance and city beaches, but it was a ski-kayaker that found his body several days after the official serach was called off.
