In 2007 environmentalist Alex (70) was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his conservation work on the West Coast. He had also been a former ranger in the Totaranui and Franz Josef areas. Before losing his battle with cancer, he also helped design a Cessna aircraft to be used for tracking kiwis in a recovery programme. He is survived by his wife and two children.
