Sir Murray (89) was the first New Zealander to break the four minute mile and represented the country at the Commonwealth Games in Cardiff (1958) and Perth (1962). He also competed at the Olympic Games in Rome (1960).
In 1988, after creating the Halberg Trust to support children with disabilities in sports, he was knighted for his services to sport and disabled children.
He will be remembered as one of New Zealand’s best ever athletes.
