A house fire took the life of diabetes medical pioneer Professor Sir Don Beaven (84). The former chairman of the Canterbury Area Health Board was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, the country's highest honour, in the 2005 New Years Honours list. Sir Don wrote approximately 250 articles and 8 books in the area of clinical medicine and diabetes. He was alone when the devastating fire in his Banks Peninsula bach occured.
