Tom (84) "dared to make a difference" in the fight against aparthied and was a prominent figure in the 1981 protests in Auckland to stop the Springbok rugby team playing in New Zealand. As a result he was arrested a number of times. In 1992 he wrote - The Life of Kathleen Hall - a book about the New Zealand missionary nurse who worked in China during the 1930s. In 1988 he was awarded the Queen's Service Order.
