Jon (84) was the "mainstay" of the NZ ballet company for over four decades and had a colourful career which included performing with infamous dancers such as Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev.
His lifelong love of ballet started at just 18 years old and he trained at the Royal Ballet School in London for a year and then danced with the Sadler's Wells Theatre. When he returned to NZ in 1962 he took on lead roles with the NZ Ballet. Later Jon and his wife, also a dancer, joined the Australian and Royal Danish Ballets and Washington Ballet, but returned to help rebuild what is now known as the Royal NZ Ballet.
He was knighted in 1999 and had received many honours in his life.
