Tane (81) was a former All Blacks captain who was known to use his head to hook the ball in a scrum. He played 61 games, including 27 tests for the All Blacks between 1971 and 1977. He also captained his country on nine occasions, including during the four-test series against the touring British and Irish Lions in 1977. In total he played 197 first-class games, and in 1973 he also captained the New Zealand Māori team.
After retiring he continued to be heavily involved in the Linwood club and was president, and a life member of that club and Canterbury Rugby. He was also president of NZ Rugby between 2003 and 2005.
He was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rugby in 2006 and will be forever remembered as a humble guy and a great family man.
