The 1963 Kaimai Range disaster is regarded as NZ's worst domestic air accident, tragically killing all 23 onboard. Shortly after 8am on the 3rd July Flight 441 took off from Whenuapai airport in northwest Auckland on route to Tauranga. It was last heard of at 9.06am, when the traffic control tower called again at 9.14am there was no response. It had crashed into a remote rocky ravine in the unforgiving Kaimai Ranges.
There is a national memorial plaque on Old Te Aroha Road, near Gordon and a commemorative display at the Classic Flyers Museum at Tauranga Airport.
