A devastating 8.9 earthquake in the North Pacific Ocean sent tsunami's as high as 10 metres crashing through the eastern prefectures of Japan, including Tokyo. The earthquake is the biggest to strike Japan in 140 years and was centred 125km off the coast and 20 km deep. The tsunami's proved deadly, striking busy cities and destroying buildings and homes for many kilometres inland. Many could not escape to safety in time.
