Steve (85) was a lover of music, theatre and life and has been described as "generous to a fault".
Involved in a wide range of community groups, hed was the owner with Newman’s Music Store (Timaru). He also ran a successful music school with his partner.
His early years began in a UK orphanage but fortunately the Newman children were reunited with their father shortly before their arrival to Timaru in 1952.
His father began the piano business from home, latterly Steve trained as a piano tuner before taking over the family business.
He was actively involved in the South Canterbury Drama League, taking to the stage many times, and also sung with the Timaru District Choir, the Diack Singers, and the Phoenix Singers. He was much loved by the South Canterbury community.
