Evelyn (96) was New Zealand's first Maori policewoman. She joined the police force in 1943, only the third intake of women cadets, training in Wellington and serving in Auckland. Her achievement opened doors to people from different backgrounds and helped shape the future and diversity in the police force we see today. She spent only three years in the force as she "married without permission" which was a violation of police restrictions around marriage at that time, however was a active attendee in all reunions.

  • Moe mai Aunty Evelyn.

WOW. As the first Maori Police Woman in New Zealand I now know why you were so articulate in your conversations with our Dad. In my opinion our Dad was very confident in Te Ao Maori and using Te Reo Maori, but when it came to the English language, that was a different story altogether. Quietly and slowly was his way. Hey you may meet up with him wandering around somewhere up there in Paradise.
