Twenty-nine miners died in the second blast of the Pike River Coal Mine disaster on the West Coast on the 24th November 2010. The first blast, possibly due to toxic gas build up, was five days earlier and had caused rescue efforts to be delayed. The gas and heat levels measured after the second blast showed fatal levels that no one could survive.

  • Never to be forgotten

Having worked and lived for a short time in Greymouth some years ago, and lived in Runanga, and had a few beers at the Dunollie pub I feel for those lost and those who have lost. I am proud to say I knew a few miners while there, fine people, and very hospitable.
Having lived in a few places around the country my opinion of Coasters is that they are the people who best represent the values of the hard working, roll your sleeves up New Zealand people that many of us would remember from our youth. In them resides the best values of this small country.

So let us all support the parents, partners, uncles and Aunts, grand-parents, children and grandchildren whose lives are so heavy with grief at this very sad time. Blessings especially to those who will never get to meet their loved ones.
