    • Thank you, Isak

Isak, your light and energy are sorely missed. I admire the kindness that you showed everyone in your life. I admire the respect and spirit you brought to your work. I admire the humble heart and willingness to learn you radiated inside and outside of the classroom. Your example is a gift, thank you.

On 18 April 2019 @ 19:40 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, our lives like we knew it changed forever.
Isak, you are gone.Isak, you are here.

Today, one month later, walking on the beach in Wilderness we think: imagine you and Nina and John walking towards us to surprise us. You know we love surprises!
Tonight we light the barbeque to braai crispy chicken portions and make tomato and onion braaibroodjies, and we think back on those good times when we all would sit around the fire, by my "famous" mosaic fireplace talking nonsense, telling jokes, laughing, drinking beer (mom red wine of course), eating chippies and listening to Zirk Berg or Valiant Swart.
Klim ek op die wit perd dan dink ek om ma, klim ek op die swart perd dan dink ek om pa - oh how you Englishman enjoyed his songs!!

We will do those things again Isak ou Seuna, and we will all be here. You will also be here. You will always be here.

We will talk nonsense, tell jokes, laugh, drink beer (mom red wine of course), eat chippies, and listen to their songs.
Klim ek op die wit perd dan dink ons om jou...
Just like in the past- you will also be here.
We will never again walk on the beach without you.
We will never again have a barbeque in Wilderness without you.
Next time we braai pork chops! Just like you loved them.
      Dad knows exactly how

    • Isak

Isak is my nephew; present always.

News of his young death hit deeply. Incomprehension, shock, aching hurt.
Seemingly instantly a memory scroll of moments rushes in, vibrant in their vividness. Settings, words spoken, smiles exchanged ... so immediate, time collapses.

Barely older than a toddler, he toy-handcuffs my arm to a chair. I play along - how long can the attention span last after all. As it turned out, v-e-r-y long.
On each appeal for release he responds with a single sentence; "Jy sit nét daar" (You remain exactly where you are). Eventually, I offer a coin. The indelible image of his deft little fingers fishing the key from a (long) trouser pocket and unlocking the cuffs.

Years later, he stayed over a few days to work on an art portfolio. I see him. Silhouetted against the French doors in the studio, working with studied concentration on a self-portrait. It turns out beautifully - a soul countenance with icon eyes.

At the kitchen table, a small square of blue window pane glass reflects on the side of his face. He is amused that Gustav does all the cooking ... In the evenings we listen to music, introducing him to some of our generation's listening fare - old vinyls get a spin. He especially likes Patty Smith (Horses), The Clash (London Calling) and David Bowie ... I flip over the cover of Hunky Dory; "Isak, he reminds me of you"! He studies the image for a moment and flashes a smile.

Isak. Real and radiant. Rock on.

    • I Miss You!

Rainbows, I miss you so much. I think about you everyday. I still can't believe that you messaged me that morning. When I got called with the news from your number that night I thought you were playing around. I keep expecting a WhatsApp from you saying joke is over. I love you very much and I know that wherever you are , you know that. I will never forget you!

    • Mother's day

      Yesterday...
      Was the first mother's day...
      Without you...
      And we missed you...
      I missed you...
      I'll always be your mother...
