One of the world's most powerful earthquakes in a century killed hundreds of people in Chile, with the worst hit cites being Concepcion and the captial, Santiago. The 8.8-magnitude quake pounded Chile, toppling buildings and triggering tsunamis that threatened Pacific coastlines as far away as Japan.

The International Disaster Response Appeal run by Red Cross is calling for donations to help with the disaster. You can make a donation online or by phone by calling:
