Avid kayaker, Simon (20), was on a whitewater kayaking trip in Canada when he became trapped underwater. The tragedy happened when he was paddling through a drop in the Banff National Park in Alberta. His kayak overturned underneath a ledge and he became trapped for several minutes. Simon was an experienced kayaker who had studied and worked on whitewater in the tourism industry in Queenstown and Taupo. He was kayaking with two of his friends when the accident happened.
