Cartoonist Murray (78) will be forever known for his Footrot Flats characters which included Wal, Dog, Cooch, Cheeky Hobson, Aunt Dolly, Horse, Pongo, Rangi, Charlie, Major, Jess and the Murphy family of Irish and Hunk and Spit. It was first published in Wellington's Evening Post newspaper in 1976 and grew to inspire a stage muscial and New Zealands first feature-length animated film in1986 called Footrot Flats: The Dog's Tale. He is survived by his wife.
