Steve (61) was captain of NZ's first successful Football World Cup campaign in 1982. He scored a national record six goals during the qualifying campaign against Fiji, and was also one of only two scorers in that years World Cup Finals tournament in Spain but lost to Scotland, His international career spanned from 1976 to 1988, including a record 105 appearances for NZ. In 1991 he was inducted into the NZ Soccer Media Association Hall of Fame and was then awarded FIFA's top award, the FIFA Order of Merit, before the opening of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In 2016 he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to football
