American musician Alex (59) was best known for his work with rock bands the Box Tops and Big Star died in a hospital after having had heart problems. His musical career started in the 1960s as vocalist for the colourful soul group the Box Tops. The band acheived a number one hit with "The Letter" and a lesser hit with "Cry Like a Baby". In 1970 he formed the Memphis rock group Big Star. He was a multi talented songwriter, guitarist, singer and producer and in his solo music career later in life, he drew a loyal following in the indie and alternative music fields. He is survived my his wife and son.
