Legendary rugby league player Maunga played for the Maori rugby team from 1954 to 1958 before then making the national rugby league team in 1961, playing until 1966. He obtained legendary status during his test career when he played prop alongside fellow front-row legends Sam Edwards (prop) and Jock Butterfield (hooker). Maunga is also current Kiwis and Warriors player Stacey Jones grandfather.
