The 40th anniversary of the Air New Zealand DC10's Mt Erebus disaster is marked on the 28th November 2019. The 1979 sightseeing flight consisted of 257 passengers and crew destined for a 11 hour round trip to Antartica. The plane crashed into Mt Erebus and there were no survivors. Those that lost their lives included 200 New Zealanders, 24 Japanese, 22 Americans, 6 British, 2 Canadians, one Australian, one French and one Swiss.
The tragedy gripped the nation as searchers battled extreme weather conditions to retrieve the bodies and plane remenants. Over 60 people worked on the accident site, most in body recovery. 213 victims were eventually identified. The disaster is New Zealand's biggest single tragedy, followed closely by the Napier Earthquake in 1931.

  • Pip

I was 19 and working at the Riverina Hotel in Hamilton NZ - Pip was taken by her dad on the flight for her birthday. It was such a sad day and one i will never forget because it is the anniversary of my mum who had died 7 years before. Pip was always nice and young with so much potential. She and her dad were a real loss to the community.

In memory of my NO 1 father-in-law. It feels like only yesterday that we sat all night hoping against hope that you had missed the flight, or changed your mind and not gone, as you often did. Fondest memories of the times you visited us to cook your mutton birds Dad, when Mum would not let you cook them at home....lol You would be so proud of your grandchildren and what they have done with their lives. You are loved and missed.

  • Remebering TE901 and Erebus

I was was living in Auckland at the time this Tragedy happened. Having flown for many years on Air New Zealand, it was just utter disbelief at the news. I recall laying in bed listening to talk back radio that night and wondering just how this could have happened, to an airline I traveled on frequently, and trusted implicitly.

Many years have passed, but I can still remember that day as if it were yesterday. Many questions have been answered & lessons learned since, I hope for those left behind, that they have found solace & peace in their lives.

I offer my condolences to all the relatives of the Passengers and crew of TE901.

  • Remembering Kay

It's taken me more than 30 years to find Kay, with whom I worked when she went on this voyage. A generous, lovely woman (with great hair), and one of the kindest people I've known. Obviously unforgettable.

  • Katrina Mary Morrison (Air Hostess)

Although I didnt know Katrina, every year since then, I have been touched by the beautiful verse put in the newspaper by her parents. I have kept that verse, and its sentiments with a feeling of great sadness. Such a great sense of loss her family must have felt. I sensed too that Katrina must have been the most wonderful, loving and beautiful daughter. My own daughter has been flying with Air NZ for some years and so to me it is a poignant reminder that we must cherish each day we have with our children.

  • In memory of Katrina Morrison

For Katrina - Only here for such a short time, but left such a lasting impression on all of us - a truly beautiful person. You are still remembered dearly by all who had the privilege to meet and know you. Your family in Scotland all remember you with fondness and sadness that you were taken away.
