Eric (89) was one of New Zealand's most highly decorated World War 2 soldiers. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for conspicuous bravery during the Italian campaign. He was promoted to sergeant at that time and, as a keen search and destroy operator, he was given the nickname "The Ferret". He came through the war largely unhurt and lived his life in Waimate.
