Pioneer abstract painter Don (88) was instrumental in the evolution of abstract art in New Zealand.He was known for his dry sense of humour and one of New Zealand's most senior and respected practitioners. In 1999 he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to New Zealand art. In 2003 he also received an honorary Doctorate in Literature from the University of Canterbury. His commitment to painting throughout his battle with cancer later in life was remarkable. He is survived by his wife and three children.
