An earthquake destroyed Louis (74) home at the historic Elms Farm homestead near Kaikoura and also tragically took his life on that fateful night. Miraculously his mother (100) and another elderly woman were pulled from the ruins and survived. His mother had lived at the 20-room home with her family since 1952 but the 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which was centred close by, reduced the two buildings on the property to rubble. Louis was described as a quiet, private man who did a lot for his community.
